The frontier in the fight against childhood obesity should be pushed back to toddlers and preschoolers, a new study suggests. The researchers found that kids ages 3-5 already have developed a taste for sugary, fatty, and salty foods, and easily recognize the brands that offer these options.

The university researchers found that very young children, once exposed to foods with high sugar, fat and salt contents, develop a palate for those foods, which are usually higher in flavor than their healthier alternatives, but are also the foods most closely linked to childhood obesity.

The study was comprised of two experiments. In the first, 67 children and their parents were asked a series of questions about what foods the children liked. Foods with added flavor, such as chips, ketchup and chocolate milk, were favorites among the children, and parent responses confirmed their children’s affinity for foods with high amounts of sugar, salt and fat.

The second experiment examined whether marketing affects children’s preferences for unhealthy foods. One hundred eight children were shown pictures of fast food and soda, and asked to determine whether the product was made by Brand A, Brand B, or not offered in fast food stores. The study found that children who were able to match the most foods and drinks with their brands were also those whose parents reported their children as having the strongest preference for sugary, fatty and salty foods.

In other words, children exposed to fast foods and soda were more likely to favor these flavors over others.
All of the 3-5-year-olds were able to match some foods with the brands that serve them, and some turned out to be experts.
“It’s amazing to sit down a 3½ or 4-year-old and have them get 90 percent right,” says Dr. Bettina Cornwell, a marketing professor at the University of Oregon and co-author of the study.

Cornwell explains that, in a vicious cycle, marketers want to promote foods that appeal the most to consumers. Consumers choose more flavorful foods over their blander competitors, but these foods rely on sugar, fat or salt to achieve a bigger flavor pop. As people buy more of these unhealthy products, their palate for sugary, fatty and salty foods increases, which creates further incentive for marketers to push them.

“They’re in a war against each other of being more flavorful, more extreme,” she says.

The study reports that children partial to these more flavorful foods are also more likely to add extra flavors, such as condiments or salt, to existing food to get an even bigger “flavor hit.”

Cornwell says the study’s biggest implication is that the fight against childhood obesity needs to start at a young age, and start at home.

“If we want to influence the obesity epidemic, we have to start earlier. If we wait until school age, a child’s palate is probably developed,” she says. She explains that once children arrive in a new environment like school, they will choose what they know and like. If they prefer sugary, fatty and salty foods, they’ll be likely to ignore the salad bar altogether.

The study suggests reducing kids’ exposure to unhealthy foods so that they don’t develop a taste for big flavor kicks. Cornwell says the rule to remember is “repeated exposure leads to preference formation,” so the goal is to eliminate opportunities for exposure.

The study recommends putting foods high in sugar, fat or salt out of sight of young children. “Little kids are great about that kind of stuff,” Cornwell says. “Out of sight out of mind.” The same principle applies to food advertising. The less kids see ads for foods, the less they’ll demand those foods.

Not sure where to draw the line on what you let your kid eat or watch? Cornwell has some novel advice: “Interview them.” Ask your own child what makes them want to eat certain foods. “They’ll tell you all about it,” she says.

The study was conducted by Cornwell and Anna McAlister, a professor at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. An early version was released in the journal Appetite. The final version is due to be released in print soon.

People claim that location voiture is an absurd idea for anyone who owns a personal car. However, if you give it a hard though, you will be amazed to observe that how much sense it makes to location voiture. Therefore, I will talk about top 3 reasons to location voiture:

Reason # 1: Airplanes

If you are travelling to a country on vacations and want to save time and money, you must choose location voiture service for travelling between cities to cities. Travelling through airplanes is considered fast and easy, but you should also consider the hassles it has after the higher security checks, higher fare prices and the trouble it gives you all together just to go to a city within reach with a car. You will save a lot of money travelling their through location voiture.

Reason # 2: Not Having a Car

Are you going on vacation to a city of your dream but you do not own a car? Or maybe your car is not sufficient to travel long distances or carry all your family comfortably? No problem. Location voiture will always be there for you. Vacations are for relaxing and feeling good, you do not want to get stuck in the middle of nowhere with your family, or sitting on each other inside your car because of the lack of space. Therefore, location voiture is the best option for you in such scenarios.

Reason # 3: Driving is better than Flying

You might say am I crazy? Think again. I am not. Flying is a faster and more comfortable way of travelling from one place to the other. However, if you are on a vacation to an unrecognized city, you would want to see more and more of the city and explore that place to its peaks. Therefore, in such cases, driving is always better than flying. You will have some amazing sights during the travel and see places and locations that you might not have seen ever before.

If you are a business man and you have lots of business in Italy it is cheaper to buy a car than to rent one each time when you need. You can try noleggio lungo termine, which means leasing. It is better to know these words when you are searching for a car. It will be easier to find it over the Internet or in local news papers and ads. You can choose any car you want depending on your needs. Each moth you will pay a part of the money, and after you finish the car is completely yours. Any way you would pay each month to rent a car. With noleggio lungo termine instead of renting you buy it.

Even better if you want to you can rent it when you don’t need it so you will gain more money. In this way the car is paying its own value. This is the best thing to do because it will be a win-win situation. You have a car and in the same time you gain benefits. You should consider in buying a new car. With noleggio lungo termine you will find plenty of good deals. If you buy it on the company name you won’t pay any kind of taxes. There are lots of things to do with a brand new care. Be wise and you will gain lots of money.

On the Internet you will find all the information that you need. Furthermore you should try to learn few simple phrases in Italian in case that the dealer doesn’t speak English. It will be a shame if you find a good price but you can’t communicate with the seller. Search for noleggio lungo termine, learn some Italian and you will have your dream car in no time.

In those rare moments that you are out of Facebook and you’re actually not in front of your PC, these rare moments are probably called ‘living’ and ‘vacation’. IF you’re going to step out of the comfort of your home and cyberworld, might as well opt to hotel living. Hotels nowadays are a far cry from hotels of yesteryears where you get a bed, a bath and a breakfast. Hotels are sometimes the destinations itself. I’m sure you don’t imagine fancying yourself inside of a box, but hey, you can have fun inside hotels without necessarily losing all your money in the casinos.

• Lounge shows – Sometimes, they’re free, while at times, they are charged but it will probably cost you just a drink or two. Lounge shows can stretch your vacation dollars and give a heck of a good time with good company.

• Production shows – Maybe the Pussycat Dolls are in town, Madonna, or maybe Barbara Streisand (okay, maybe you’ll pass), but the point is, big names hold their shows on hotels sometimes even on a weekly basis. With hotel production shows, you don’t need to endure 10 Elvis impersonators. There are other entertainers that hold their shows, sometimes for a measly $100 bucks or if you have the cash, they can go to thousands for VIP seats. Imagine being just right in front of Barbara Streisand. Okay, maybe not, make that Nicole instead.

• Adult entertainment – now you’re all ears – and eyes. Some clubs offer strip contests and strip shows to cater to the not-so-wholesome guests of the hotel. For a small fee or for a few drinks, get adult entertainment live. Don’t expect much though (especially those generally termed ‘too much to the point that it’s illegal) because of course they have local laws to follow and an image to uphold (whatever).

• Chance entertainment – Hotels bring in special guests (read actors or musicians) to perform in their concert halls. While some are announced and others are not, you can catch these exciting and entertaining shows without ever leaving your hotel.

• Cultural shows – What better way to see and appreciate the local culture than by their songs and dance. Cultural shows are held sometimes nightly or weekly (depending on the hotel and number of guests) along with cocktails or dinner. Dinner menus though don’t always see to get favorable menus because apparently, the shows are the main highlight, and not the food.

IF you do not want to play with your 2D friends anymore, or taking care of your 2D pets, or cooking in your 2D café, hotel entertainment is actually way, way better than them or your mafia buddies and enemies. Besides, you don’t need to travel really far just to go to exotic hotels – even hotels in your area (the major ones at least) offer equally interesting or maybe even better hotel entertainment than those in Vegas.

So than tagging along with mom and dad, just tell them that you’d rather stay in your room.

I’ve always loved the comfort of home. Even after moving here in the sunny state, I always try to have the familiarity of home – the familiar layout in the receiving room, the familiar scents in my bathroom, and the familiar items and storage in the kitchen.

And when I travel, some hotels can make me feel at home, while others, well, I don’t even feel like guest, I feel like the staff would love to take a bite of my head if they get the chance. I’m not even a bad guest to start with. So how about those who stay long-term in hotels? Some spend weeks to even months living day in and day out in hotel rooms.

So what’s the real deal in short term and long-stay hotels? I have some hotel tips below to guide you.

Short-term stay

• When you know you’re going to stay only for a few days, most of the time people opt for high-class hotels where there is a wide option of services and facilities. Spa salons, night clubs and driving ranges are just some things people enjoy when staying short-term in hotels. Having these facilities and services can make you feel you’re really in a destination get-away instead of being cramped in a hotel.

While it may give your credit card a workout, or your corporate account for that matter, these amenities will make your few days stay memorable.

Long-term stay

It is best to look for hotels offering long-stay rates and deals. When hotels give out offers like these, these are backed-up by facilities and amenities that you can avail and really feel at home like:

• Kitchen – no need to follow the schedule of room service, or available menus, or times their restaurant is open. You can cook the food that you want, any time you want. If you’re staying for a number of weeks, no need to force yourself to like their same old, same old restaurant menu the whole time.

• Appliances – Long stay hotels have a complete line-up of appliances versus regular hotel rooms.

• Linens – A wide range of linen is available for long-stay guests, instead of the same ones found in all rooms in regular hotels.

• Phone use – This can be unlimited depending on the offer of your hotel.

• Internet – This is also sometimes bundled in the whole package during your entire stay.

• Own voicemail – To really say you’re at home, why not have your own voicemail so when people call you up, you are indeed ‘living in a hotel’, minus the Hilton lineage.

People opt for long-stay in hotels for varied reasons like:

• Business travel

• Temporary housing

• Relocation

• Budget vacation with laundry and kitchen

• Buying a home

• Remodeling a home

• Visiting relatives

Hotel staying may it be short-term or long-term depends only whether on what your purpose is. Each has their own advantage and it’s only up to you to maximize your stay. While most tourists or vacationers are more familiar with short-term stay, opt for long-stay hotels when you want t be more at home.

Get ready to pack your stuff, if you plan to have your second honeymoon and stay in one of the romantic hotels listed below. These unique hotels or inns will surely give you a very romantic experience with the help of their wonderful amenities. Don’t forget to visit the websites below to check out their amenities and available rooms that would suit you.

1. Auberge du Soleil

Where: Napa Valley, California, United States

Website: www.aubergedusoleil.com

One traveler gave a five star review: “Auberge du Soleil sets the standard for luxurious self-indulgence. The public areas and grounds are gorgeous. The guestrooms are beautifully decorated in a Mediterranean style and have all the amenities. Don’t miss having a meal at the hotel’s restaurant – a real treat after a hard day of shopping, lunching, or touring the nearby vineyards. Dinner is an integral part of the Auberge du Soleil experience.”

2. Viceroy Anguilla

Where: Anguilla, British West Indies, Caribbean

Website: www.viceroyhotelsandresorts.com/anguilla

One traveler commented with a five star: “This was our fifth or sixth trip to Anguilla and first at the newViceroy hotel. We truly enjoyed the visit and I will say that for a new hotel that is working on the kinks here and there, it was top of the line in the Caribbean. Rooms are just gorgeous. With kiddie pool, family pool and adult pool there was certainly enough for everyone. Meads or Barnes beaches for those that want sand. Anguilla is a very special island for relaxation. No cruise ships. No casinos but miles of beaches and friendly people. If you want nightlife, go to another island. But if you want natural beauty and pure relaxation, go to Anguilla and the Viceroy. Our compliments to the staff. This is truly destined to be a premier property in the Caribbean.”

3. Ritz Paris

Where: Paris, France

Website: www.ritzparis.com/home_ritz/home.asp?show_all=1

One traveler gave a five star comment: “We have stayed at this hotel a number of times. We also love the George V and the Meurice but this one is the best. Whereas the Meurice has a beautiful restaurant, nice views and the bathroom in the 3d floor suites is over the top, it has too many business travelers and is too crowded. The George V has the friendliest staff, great views of the Eiffel Tower and wonderful suites but is at a poor location. The Ritz is the best. It is exclusive. It has a great location. The suites and rooms are elegant, comfortable and gorgeous decorated in classic Louis XIV French styling and colors. The pool is wonderful. And the restaurant is the best. I have had the finest croissants, orange juice, hot chocolate and dessert I have ever eaten in this restaurant. The staff is incredibly accommodating. In the bar restaurant I had the best hamburger I have ever eaten- it was 64 euros but hey, it included fries. The Hemingway bar is a kick. The concierge staff has done everything from booking the best restaurants, to getting me needed medicine to fixing a pair of expensive shoes. The only negative is there are no views as compared with the other top hotels.”

4. Selous Game Reserve

Where: LukulaSelous, Tanzania

Website: www.greatplainsconservation.com/selous/index.html

One tourist gave a five star review of: “The food is excellent, the service very personal and outstanding, the views are amazing, the pool is good… but the most amazing thing is that there are no fences around the camp and an elephant walked right by our tent. Talk about a unique experience!Safari guides are extremely knowledgeable and the staff back at the lodge certainly knows how to pamper their guests.Selous Game Reserve is not as well-known as other areas in Tanzania and Kenya, but definitely worth it. Less tourists, so you don’t feel you’re at a wildlife amusement park. Lots of animals to see and staying in a luxury tent, showering in the open air, being served tea and biscuits in the morning. It all makes for a perfect safari experience.”

5. The Ritz-Carlton, Powerscourt

Where: Enniskerry, County Wicklow, Ireland

Website: www.ritzcarlton.com/en/Properties/Powerscourt/Information/Default.htm

One traveler gave a five star review of: “My husband and I have been world travelers for over 25 years, staying. At Ritz and Four Seasons and other five star hotels, but none comes close to the Powerscourt Ritz–from the stunning rooms with their separate dressing rooms, elegant baths and high tech, to the amazing pool and bike rides on the gorgeous grounds! We’d give it 6 stars!”

6. Il Salviatino

Where: Fiesole, Tuscany, Italy

Website: www.salviatino.com

One traveler gave a five star review of: “No check in and no front desk. A historic home restored to accommodate discerning clients. Our visit was early January 2011Greated on arrival as if you were visiting family and friends. A most comfortable and relaxing stay. The location is extraordinary, the ethos is absolutely customer focused, the decor is understated elegance, the staffs were unobtrusively attentive, the food was first class, the service outstanding. Il Salviatine is a joyous find.”

7. Rosewood Mayakoba

Where: Riviera Maya, Mexico

Website: www.rosewoodmayakoba.com/en/index.cfm

One tourist commented on a five star review of: “There’s nothing more I look forward to then relaxing and being pampered when escaping the city. I first stayed at the Rosewood Hotel in Jumby Bay (it’s their own island in Antigua). After that experience I knew I had to try another rosewood. When we arrived felt a true ‘welcome’ feel not one where someone was payed to try to make me happy, we truly felt welcomed. We stayed in the beachfront suite, although a hefty price tag at about $1750/night, I swear it was worth every single dollar!!! We were able to check out the other rooms and they were nothing less than impressive but even though the beachfront was smaller and not as ‘wow’ all you need to do is wake up, pull open the sliding door and hear the ocean waves. A patio and plunge pool sits directly on the beach, honestly the most relaxing and beautiful weekend we have ever experienced. It hasn’t even been a year and I have just booked a trip back there for April – and counting down the days to heavenly bliss. And to add the Sps is incredible!!!

8. Wharekauhau

Where:North Island, New Zealand

Website: www.wharekauhau.co.nz

One tourist gave a five star review of: “If you are willing to pay for it – this is a fantastic place. Far away from everything, a great place to relax. The staff is very friendly – a gorgeous lodge.”

9. Rayavadee

Where: Krabi Island, Thailand

Website: www.rayavadee.com

One traveler gave a five star comment of: “Amazing time in an amazing hotel with great staff. Yes this hotel is expensive but you really get what you pay for. The Thai restaurant would easily get a Michelin star if they were listed. The green curry snowfish is the best Thai dish I have ever had and the martinis are the best I have ever tasted. The excursions are indeed overpriced but you have the choice to go with local firms if you want. If you can afford it, book it without hesitation.”

10. Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara

Where: Qasr Al Sarab, Liwa Desert, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Website: www.qasralsarab.anantara.com

One traveler gave a five star review of: “A real oasis, would definitely recommend this place for stunning desert scenery – well worth the long drive for a couple of days here. It is a huge resort, but fortunately not that crowded when we were there. Big room with an amazing bathtub. Large terrace off our room was great for lazing around in the shade from the midday sun. The buffets for breakfast and dinner were excellent, and we enjoyed star gazing with the telescope outside the bar. Camel ride and dune drive were enjoyable. The Spa was very good, with lovely views from the treatment rooms, and excellent Thai therapists. The only down side was the large number of rather arrogant Emirati men staying – if you haven’t seen what they can be like then beware – they think that they are superior to every other race (and obviously gender), and were extremely rude and disrespectful to the staff, particularly in the spa.”

Those are the reviews from people who have stayed in the hotels which we hope helped you decide. For more information about the hotels and their amenities, just pick from the hotels listed and check their website. Don’t forget to leave your comments and if I missed other romantic places please do share with us.

Good systems have good user interfaces. They anticipate what we want to do, learn our preferences and foibles; protect us from mistakes. As devices get better at anticipating what we do, they gradually become a part of our personalities, as we get more and more accustomed to how they learn about us and come to reflect ourselves in them. Picking up someone else’s smartphone feels like entering a strange world, where everything is familiar… but creepily wrong. It has learned all about someone else, whose preferences inevitably just feel doofy. I long to get back to my own device, which has the email icon in the right place, and knows what to do with copies of sent emails. It feels like coming home. Even though my laptop is slowing down and crashes every now and then, I resist reinstalling the image, even though I know that make everything faster and more stable. I hate the idea of having to teach it all about me again; what pictures I like on the desktop, what web sites I go to. All the things I do without thinking, I would have to think about again.

Sometimes this familiarity absolutely scares the bejeebers out of me.

Not because I am afraid that my laptop will learn too much about me, or become sentient and try to take my place. The stupid thing goes into a total panic if I change printers without telling it. I don’t feel threatened. But I am scared that I will come to depend on it knowing me so well that I will do something stupid. For every email address that auto-completes, every password that my browser remembers for me, I feel myself getting a little more dependent and looser. I let my system take care of the small things so that I can think of bigger stuff (I tell myself). But what if the little things aren’t so little anymore?

I got to thinking about how UIs are evolving when I read about new cars coming on the market that can park themselves. Letting a car steer itself into a space will take some getting used to, but I can see how this could be considered a little thing. Engineers are also experimenting with cars that will drive themselves, or at least steer themselves on the highway. That seems like a bit of a bigger deal, but I could get used to that. I could make jokes about Blue Screens of Death, or how unreliable software is, but that doesn’t really concern me. I am more worried about me.

Once I get used to my car steering itself, I expect cars to do that. That will be the new normal for how cars work, just like I expect browsers to know that when I type “nyt” I actually meanhttp//:www.nytimes.com. When I use another system that doesn’t do that, I have a small “what the…?” moment until I remember that I am not “home” and adjust.

But once I get used to my car steering on the highway, someday I know that I will get in a rental car, and it won’t be so smart. This new normal will lead to disaster, when it becomes too normal. My car already decides when to turn on the headlights, how to keep the inside temperature at 19 C, when it’s raining enough to turn on the wipers, and when it wants to go to the garage. I have come to expect that cars have central door locking. That can lead to an unpleasant surprise with some rentals, but nothing as bad as assuming that my car will keep me from bashing into the car ahead of me.

It’s great that these things are looking out for me, but I hope that I still remember to look out.
